CITRINE: November Birthstone

Citrine is the birthstone for the month of November. It is also recognized as the gem that commemorates the thirteenth anniversary. Citrine derives its name from the French word, ‘citron’, which is a citrus fruit that resembles a large lemon. Citrine is composed of one of the most abundant minerals on Earth: quartz. The abundance of quartz would lead one to believe that citrine would be easily found and readily available, but the fact is this gemstone is very rare in nature.

OPAL: October Birthstone

Opal is the traditional October birthstone and is also the stone given to celebrate the 14th wedding anniversary. It is believed to have originated in India, which is the source of the first opals brought to the Western world. In Sanskrit it was called upala, a “precious stone" and in ancient Rome, this became opalus. Most opals are valued for their shifting colors in rainbow hues – a phenomenon known as “play-of-color.”

Peridot is the August birthstone and the 16th anniversary gemstone. It is believed to derive from the Arabic word ‘faridat’ meaning ‘gem’, some scholars agree the word peridot is rooted in the Greek word ‘peridona’ which means ‘giving plenty’. This may explain why peridot is associated with prosperity and good fortune.

RUBY: July Birthstone

The ruby is the birthstone for July and the gem for the 15th and 40th anniversaries. The name “ruby” comes from rubeus, the Latin word for red. In ancient Sanskrit, ruby translated to ratnaraj, which meant “King of Gems.” These gems have been treasured throughout history.
